Smoothies & Juices

Green Smoothies:  These are personally a favorite of mine, even before the jaw stuff came up for me.  They're a great way to get in some super awesome nutrients.  Take a look at these recipes, and with any of the smoothies, try adding a scoop of flax seeds, chia seeds, and/or wheatgrass or superfood powders.

Spinach and/or Kale Smoothie With Avocado and Apple

My green smoothie:  I usually eye ball all the ingredients as I throw them in, but generally it's about 6-8oz of coconut water (more or less depending on how thick/thin you like your smoothie), frozen pineapple, scoop of chia seed, scoop of flax seed, scoop of wheat grass powder, half scoop of green superfood powder (superfood powder), and then any other veggies I might have on hand, IE: beet tops, carrot tops, celery, lettuce, kale, chard, spinach, etc.

Savory Smoothies: I do these for breakfast most of the time, but if you're wired shut after jaw surgery, they'll be good any time of the day, I guess!

Oatmeal Banana Smoothie (I throw a little bit of PB2 peanut butter powder in this, but you could also use regular peanut butter to give you a protein and calorie boost)

Meal Powders: I actually don't have a ton of experience with meal powders as I like to usually just throw a base (coconut water, juice, or almond milk, etc) in and then put various fruits and veggies in on top of that.  But, I did experiment with a few powders just to have something easy to do when I didn't feel like doing the other kind of smoothie.  The Raw Meal is probably my favorite, and all you need is a scoop with some milk.  It makes for a thick filling treat with all the good stuff you need in it.

Fruit Smoothies:  I plan on watering these down the first week of surgery so I can get them in with a syringe.  These are also good that first week because you're likely coming off of pain meds, and well...... we all know what pain meds do with our digestive system, so getting some natural fibers in from the fruits probably is not an awful idea.

Juices:  I picked up an Omega Vert HD 350 this year and plan on doing a lot of juicing for revision surgery since most blended things were too thick for me to get in past the wires last time around.  Learned my lesson!  My suggestion here is to stick to a masticating juicer like this one if you can get your hands on it, and bottle in airtight containers to keep for 5-7 days fresh in the fridge.  With the centrifugal juicers, you would never be able to keep it that long since everything gets so oxidized in the juicing process.  Here are some of my favorite juice recipes.  You can also see a huge list of others here:  http://www.drinkrawjuice.com/raw-juice-recipes-all.php
